. Sad, very sad. But there is hope! In the 50s and 60s this was a thriving, bustling market where all the housewives came to fill their baskets (usually made locally) with locally-grown produce. There were stalls all round the outside and a double row of stalls in the middle, and everyone was crushed trying to buy and sell. I know because I've seen old photos. But nowadays it is sad - just a handful of stalls selling the same sort of stuff that you would get in a supermarket, bought in from all over. The one redeeming feature is the interesting model of the nearby Castle - the Castillo de San Luis. To get local produce, guaranteed grown in Estepona, you need to go to the Sunday Farmers' Market held in the Plaza ABC off the seafront promenade. It's a pity because the building is very handsome, with most attractive and interesting ceramics outside. However there is hope, as the Town Hall has agreed a contract for 600,000 to be spent on renovating the building and setting it up as a Gourmet Market. I guess this means a sort of posh delicatessen. :-) This is due to be in place over the 2016-7 winter. Until then, it's a good place to get out of the heat (there are seats inside and little tables from the adjoining Bar Gaspar for a drink and a snack) and look at the model of the castle. After admiring the ceramic plaques outside, of course. .
