Gotta get yourself to lawn lake and check out the remnants of the 1982 lawn lake dam failure. Very surreal how much damage water can do and what it did here below the lake. One of the boulders that was pushed down the gorge weighs over 600 tons. Come see for yourself!

Winter Review -- Start Time 0730 End Time 1230 (with multiple breaks to hydrate / snack / adjust gear) Overall an awesome scenic hike. The first 2.5 miles are a series of switchbacks and rolling slopes. The last 3.8 miles are slow going for an average winter hiker. With the continuous uphill movement and altitude elevation, take it slow! Carrying a 50lb load I had to stop quite a few times to control body temp and my breathing rate. The last 1.5 miles was a mixture of ice and 4-6 in of snow (and it hadnt even snowed seriously yet). Recommend crampons at a minimum so you don't slip and go tumbling downhill. Lawn Lake itself was a beautiful crispy blue. The wind was harsh, especially in the middle where the "bowl" of the lake funneled all the wind. If you're winter camping, the campsite will be sufficient. I slept in vicinity of the patrol cabin to have at least 1 direction of wind blocked off, and some protection from dead trees. At night the wind will pick up significantly, ensure your stakes are in deep. My tent lifted up 15-20 times. I chose not to go to the saddle because of the limited visibility and high winds but if the weather permits, it's certainly possible.

Steady climb up leads parallel to the creek all 2400' up to Lawn Lake, beautiful, surrounded by sheer rock and scree. From there, you can climb to Crystal Lakes or all the way up to The Saddle and nearby peaks, just a couple miles beyond! On a clear day, you can see Estes Park and even the Front Range from the top!

Quite a long hike to the saddle. But it is absolutely beautiful out there. I was the only person on the trail for about 8 hours.

11/09/19 The weather man said that this will be a warm day with winds around 5-10 miles per hour. That was in the parking lot once I got on the trail it all changed. I didn’t bring snowshoes and I paid for it. Post holed all the way up to Lawn Lake and on the way down my legs were smoking.

Great views at Ypsilon Lake, even better if you continue up the waterfall trail.

Outstanding views, moderate but constant altitude gain. 6.5 miles one way. Man! How I was swearing. It's about 30,000 steps roundtrip. Be prepared for a bad weather cause rain came from nowhere 3 times. So rain jacket is recommended.

actually it's the lake itself is the charm, I would only go in the winter time though, any other season would be madness of people
