Played today from Black Tees. I'm 7 hdcp and this was a good challenge. Fairways and tees were in great winter shape with solid grass mat to hit off. Greens were fast and firm and seem to be several weeks out from aeration with some evidence still showing. Thus, having putts stay on line was a bit challenging. Green design makes hitting yardages essential and you will be penalized if you miss. Bunkers were plentiful and not maintained at all. Several looked like a bulldozer just dumped fresh loads of sand and just left it there. Not sure if this was part of a course maintenance plan or what? But, if you raked a spot and replaced your ball, sand was excellent consistency. Pace of play was good. Carts were in good shape. Practice range good shape hitting off grass. Rate was 35 so that was great, compared with what I'm used to paying in The Villages right now: 65 for conditions that are not as good as BB. Recommend this course for a good challenge and friendly staff.

I enjoyed my day there. The course is okay shape wise, the greens are slow, the fairways are tight, I think because the course gets a lot of play. The rough is thin in some spots and the bunkers have some decent sand. There was a cart guy, I think the cart girl was off. The practice area was in good shape and the carts had GPS. Everyone was pleasant, although our server in the club house needed a little attitude adjustment. We stayed for the lunch, which was included in our price, I had the pulled chicken and house chips, no it wasn't good. I was told the burgers tasted like track pads, my military brethren understand that term. Overall my experience was not quite worth the 48 min drive, although I will say you may want to try the course, I just won't be back. None of the holes had any wow factor and that's what I need. I like that they have a 19th hole to settle any bets, I've only seen this one other time and that was at Myrtle Beach. I also forgot to say, I like that some of the greens are elevated, that is a plus. The GPS factors in the slope to give you an exact yardage.

Great course. The grass is dormant in Florida this time of year (played on January 21), but the course is still in very playable condition. Lots of deep bunkers and plenty of sand, so keeping your ball in the fairway will pay dividends. Tiny, fast, undulating greens will test your approach shot and putting skills. Do your best to keep the ball below the hole or you will likely be facing a three putt situation. No water until the 18th hole, which will require a second shot forced carry of approximately 125 yards. I'm looking forward to playing Black Bear again. Recommended.

Overall, top-notch place. We've been to quite a few courses lately and Black Bear stands above. The course is in great shape for this \Florida winter\ time of year. The greens were somewhat challenging but smooth and the staff was fun-loving and very hospitable. We'll definitely be back.

Anyone not rating this 5-stars needs to be removed from the google rating system. The course is a Pete Dye design, is a links-style, meaning no trees and almost no water hazards, course and is kept in perfect shape. The course was so fun to play, great condition, and reasonably priced, that we cancelled a round elsewhere and played here again a few days later. Just a fabulous layout. Not as picturesque as World Woods, but still a beautiful course, and less than 1/2 the price of WW most days. It's my new favorite course in central Florida and I'll be back to play it again and again. Also the clubhouse has food. It's not on the menu, for some reason, but their clubhouse sandwich with homemade chips is the best clubhouse I've had, and I've had clubhouse sandwiches at over 100 golf courses and elsewhere. It's REALLY good. Come for the clubhouse sandwich, stay for the golf. :) The ONLY knock on this place is the Diet Coke on tap, the mix is off. Both days the mix was off. If they can get the mix ratios for the Diet Coke correct, this will be my first stop every time I'm down.
