Disappointing. We've been coming to this restaurant for 20 years and I've always described them as being the best steak house in Whatcom County. Unfortunately that has changed. I had the bar steak. My wife got the weiner schnitzel and we ordered the escargots for an appetizer. The escargots have always been our favorite, but they were completely different than what we've had in the past. They were even different from what was described in the menu. They used to be in a very tasty butter sauce with a crispy puff pastry over each escargots. The type of sauce that you want to soak up every drop with the yummy bread. This time they were smothered in some type of cheese sauce. The entire plate was covered with cheese sauce and the puff pastry was buried underneath and soggy. Not good. My steak was cooked as I asked but not the quality of past visits. It was mushy and chewy. My wife's schnitzel was tasty but don't put the compote on top of the schnitzel. It should be on the side. All it did was make the schnitzel mushy. Finally, her green beans were like spaghetti noodles. The taste was good but just a pile of mush. The potatoes were good but they used to be thinly sliced potatoes. Now they are more like cubed. Still taste great, I just prefer them sliced like scalloped potatoes. They hold their firmness better. I'm not trying to live in the past, but I do feel things have gone downhill a bit. I know this review will be frowned upon because the restaurant is a county favorite. I'm just being honest, and maybe they were just having a rough Saturday night.

Great service and atmosphere. Steaks are best in county. Asparagus swimming in butter and salt. French onion soup very tasty buy a little salty.Green beans seasoned and cooked to a perfect slight crunch. Potatoes are high class comfort and evenly addictive. Hot bread perfectly done. Fresh crispy salad with house made dressing. WILL be going back for a great dining experience.
Valentines dinner was a bust. Ordered online at 1230pm. Organized a pickup time for 545pm. 445pm received confirmation that my pickup time would be moved to 645pm. 615pm called regarding order. Order had been sitting at the edge of the bar from 545pm not under a heat and next to a high traffic service door (cold). Return to my vacation home 40min drive only to find that we received 1 meal not 2. After calling into the restaurant and speaking with a manager we were able to recoup the difference paid for a 39 steak plus tip but honestly put a huge damper on my surprise v-day dinner. Sadly this will be our first and our last order. Paying attention to details matter Herb Niemann staff.
Amazing as always. Being a life-long patron means seeing this home away from home grow and flourish and all of the “family” along with it. After so much craziness it is so nice to go somewhere that feels normal and see people interacting with one another over alway great food and atmosphere. Whether you need a great steak, a feeling of normalcy or just a good home cooked german meal, this is the place.
Excellent steaks cooked to the perfect medium rare! The goulash soup was awesome! Service was top notch! I had the ribeye and the wife had the filet mignon. Perfect char and crust on my ribeye! Sad to say, my wife asked for steak sauce...i was so embarrassed!
