Fish Strand Hill
N/A
This plaque on the corner of Fish Strand Hill and Market Street records the arrival in Falmouth of Charles Darwin on board HMS Beagle, 2nd October 1836. This was the conclusion of Darwin's epic voyage, which began on 27 December 1831 from Plymouth. Quite possibly both Charles Darwin and Captain Robert FitzRoy would have come on shore at Fish Strand Quay, up the same steps used by Lieutenant Lapenotiere in 1805 when he arrived to report the naval victory at Trafalgar, when Lord Nelson died in action.
