My fiancée and I took her engagement ring to Cinar to be sized. He was recommended to us by another fine jewelry dealer in downtown Istanbul. At first I was a bit skeptical when I saw him cut the ring at an angle off the bottom center, and not at the bottom center, but I chose not to say anything, mainly because of the language barrier (he speaks little to no English). Then, he proceeded to bend the ring, to close the gap for soldering, above the lower half of the ring, which not only created an off circular shape, but as it turned out, it loosened two of the side stones and weakened 2 of the 4 the prongs of the center stone (a 1.5 carat diamond). Bottom line, two of the side stones fell off the ring, and worse yet, the center stone became lose and ended up falling off the ring altogether. So, my fiancée not only lost two stones off the side of her ring, she also lost a VVS2, G color, 1.5 carat diamond. Now, I have to spend additional money to buy her a new ring, and since my fiancée is Russian and lives in Russia (I live in the US), we’re facing the plausibility of paying import tax because her replacement ring is worth way more than the 220.00 Euros Russia has established as the maximum value for duty free imported jewelry. If you find yourself in Istanbul and in need of having to resize a ring, get a ring guard before asking this guy to resize your ring.
