A HISTORY OF MONTESSORI Maria Montessori was born in Italy in 1870.  She was a math prodigy, a physicist, and an anthropologist.  At 24 years of age she was the first woman to graduate from the medical school in Rome.  She was a pragmatist, a visionary and a humanitarian; a friend of Gandhi’s and Thomas Edison’s; a three-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee.  Her face is on Italy’s 1000 lire bill.  Today, we know Maria Montessori best for the educational method that bears her name. Maria Montessori came to education in a roundabout way.  She was a doctor in a Rome psychiatric clinic and her patients were children from orphanages and asylums across the city.  She saw her patients first and foremost as human beings, and searched for ways to help improve their mental and spiritual (as well as physical) health.  In trying to reach their minds, she made discoveries so fascinating that she left her medical practice.  She applied what she learned, testing and  refining her ideas throughout the rest of her long life. Being interested in the end-result of education rather than its method, Montessori focused on developing “a complete human being, oriented to the environment and adapted to his or her time, place and culture.”  She worked with no preconceived ideas about how young people should be taught.  She simply observed them, gathering evidence about how their minds worked and formulating tools that responded to their needs. In 1906, she accepted the challenge to work with a group of sixty children of working parents in the San Lorenzo district of Rome.  It was there that she founded the first Casa dei Bambini, or “Children’s House.”  What ultimately became the Montessori method of education developed there was based upon Montessori’s scientific observations of these children’s effortless ability to absorb knowledge  from their surrondings, as well as their tireless interest in manipulating materials.  Every piece of equipment, every exercise, every method Montessori developed was based on what she observed children to do “naturally,” by themselves, unassisted by adults. Her observations contained groundbreaking insights into human development and cognition – insights that are largely upheld by research today.   We can do no better than introduce her words, and then step aside.  Montessori died in Holland in 1952, but her work continues.  Today there are close to five thousand private and approximately two hundred public Montessori schools in the United States. The classrooms feature custom-sized tables, chairs, sinks, and bookshelves; and the outdoor play area has many objects for creative play. All of these are designed to appeal to the child’s natural curiosity. Activities are positioned around the room for toddlers to choose independently. They have freedom of movement to explore, and they are given the time they need to complete what they start. Classroom materials are of value to toddler development. They allow toddlers to begin to experience concepts of sequence, form, shape, movement and sound. Classroom activities change and evolve as the child grows physically, emotionally and intellectually. Spanish instruction is offered weekly class through music and movement. Children ages three to six experience an academically enriched atmosphere within a strong social community. A strong drive to learn new things is developed through seeing the accomplishments of other children. The unique ability of children this age to absorb their environment , language and culture is aided by the combination of the social structure and the academics of the Montessori classroom. Primary children learn through the use of manipulatives as well as through teacher guidance. The teacher works with a child individually or in a small group, and then allows the child many repetitions with that activity to master its content in depth. Children use the Montessori materials and engage in activities specifically designed for their learning in the areas of Practical Life, Sensorial Materials, Natural Science, Geography, History, Language Skills, Art, Music, and Spanish as well as Social, Emotional and Physical Development. In an exciting discovery style of learning, elementary children work in small groups on a variety of projects which spark the imagination and engage the intellect. The Lower and Upper Elementary classrooms are fully equipped with Elementary Montessori materials which provide a stimulating environment for exploration into various areas of learning including biology, history, language, mathematics in all its branches, science, music and art. Each beautiful 2,000 square foot classroom also has a full kitchen for cooking and science experiments as well as a library for research and learning. At this age children begin to take responsibility for organizing and managing their own time. Formal lessons generate follow up assignments which must be completed on schedule. Work diaries and other techniques are introduced to teach effective time management. These experiences become the foundation for self motivated and disciplined study. In the classroom, children are encouraged to work together and as they collaborate on projects, they learn to identify and share their particular strengths and skills. A well defined social system provides activities that build group cohesion and teach conflict resolution. This in turn encourages the children to cooperate and empowers them.
