P.za della Signoria

It’s good, but it’s not the real thing. Just making sure you know that.

I loved this place, the statues are great regardless whether they are replicas or not.
A replica of Michelangelo's David stands in Piazza della Signoria in Florence, and at a distances you would be none the wiser. Although being a masterpiece in its own right, with a closer look you start to noticed the lack of a smooth surface which you would expect from polished chiselled marble. As of 1873 the original David sits protected in the Galleria dell'Accademia, which apparently took 40 men a whole 4 days, to move the statue less than a mile. It is 17 feet tall and weighs more than 12,000 pounds, and is sculpted from a single piece of white marble. What makes this block of marble even more special, is the fact that it was discarded by two previous sculptors, because of flaws and being too difficult to work with. It also would be interesting to know the real reason why Michelangelo decided to exaggerated the size of David's right hand…
the best sculpture I have every seen, it just needs to talk.
Nice replica of the original which is in the musuem behind the sculpture
