I emailed just over a week ago to ask about a self defense class for myself and my 13 year old niece. We were able to get in for a class with Stephen, an owner, for today, already. He spent a little over an hour and a half with us. It's clear that women's self defense is something he cares about deeply. The class was really well thought out. I had taken a class in college that was much longer but less helpful. Stephen didn't only focus on physical encounters, as we'd expected. His approach was to first help my niece and me recognize behaviors that might make us a target for a predator, and then look at ways to change our behavior, and make a predator dismiss us as a target before a confrontation. The best case scenario is an encounter that never happens! But then the class moved on to other actions one can take to discourage a potential attacker when you see them coming, and then to defensive moves that one would use if things got physical. Considering our own actions, and why, as women, we behave as we do, and then thinking about small changes that could make a big difference in our safety, was probably the most valuable part. The physical part of the class was kept to a few very simple, but effective, moves to increase our chances if an encounter became physical. Which makes sense, because if I am being attacked I'm probably not going to be able to recall anything complicated. A few simple moves that can be practiced is ideal. But the real lesson was to do all we can to prevent things from getting that far. Stephen was extremely knowledgeable, professional and enthusiastic, and my niece, who is quite shy, really enjoyed his class and was engaged, as was I. Now it's our job to remember the information and practice. I feel much better knowing my niece has this lesson in her tool kit. Beyond that, the dojo is a really fine facility, neat, clean and inviting. Taken together, Five Rings is a great place to take a class or train in the martial arts. Highly recommend!

Women's safety is a top priority and it's just fantastic how the owner handles the classes and the subject as a whole. Would give more stars but Google only allows 5.

The Deckers are awesome! My kids have been going to Five Rings for a year and I couldn’t ask for a better experience. They are great with the kids and have fostered a true love and respect for the sport in my children. Five stars for Five Rings!
