It's a small, but unique Army Post. I'll leave my personal feeling about the units out of it and instead focus on the base for this review. I spent the better part of my career here. If you're coming here from a big post (Bragg, Hood, Campbell, etc) you're in for a culture shock, but this place will grow on you. Unfortunately, what would never fly on one of those bases is acceptable here. Don't be shocked when you see piles of junk stacked behind BLDG 1001 AND 1004. Area beautification isn't a priority when you only have 4 months of warm weather. Wainwright has most everything other posts have, just less of it. Don't rely on Clothing & Sales for much. Their ability to forecast is horrible. Just get used it. CIF isn't as bad as Joe says. Just clean your gear. I've PCSd from FWA twice and never had anything kicked back. The hospital has good years and bad, depending on the current stock of doctors. When I last left a couple of years ago they were good, but like any post, that changes pretty fast. I never lived in post, but housing is your typical mixed bag of old and new. God help you if you get stuck with the old stuff. But, as a young married Soldier, living on post is your BEST option. It's very, very expensive in the interior. Overall, it's not a terrible post, as long as you temper your expectations. Don't become a barracks/post rat. Get out and see Alaska. You'll regret it if you don't. Plus, you'll get use to -60...you only need to worry when it stops hurting
I Love the summers here it was awesome but the winters were brutal but i do have to say the northern lights were magnificent.
Stationed there from 82 to 86. Was a bit of a shock coming from Bragg but adjusted quickly. We loved our assignment there. Didn't leave with a new car - didn't get divorced but did leave with a new kid. The key to enjoying the interior of AK is to savor the experience. Experience the beauty and vastness the place has to offer. Prepare for the cold and dark but take it as it is and alls well. Would go back anytime.
Our son has been stationed there for the last 6 months. His father and I plan on visiting in July and cant wait! Being from Texas it's going to be an awesome experience.
