Over 6,400 acres of wilderness designated by U.S. Congress in March 2009 and managed by Blm office in Prineville, Oregon. Located couple miles from John Day Fossil Beds National Monument - Clarno Unit next to Pine Creek Conservation Area. Part of 110 million acre National Preservation System providing clean air, water and habitat critical for rare and endangered plants and animals. Open to hiking, horseback riding, hunting and natural study. Wilderness is named for a spring in center of area, producing water year round. Rugged cliffs, remote canyons, colorful geologic features, variety of wildlife and native plants make up the remote area. Rock outcroppings in Spring Basin formed by volcanic mudflows aka lahars from Clarno volcanoes that stretched across Northeastern Oregon. Similar lahars were were formed at John Day Fossil Beds Clarno Unit. Wild and Scenic John Day River borders area. Permission through private property is needed to gain access to river.
