A unique Nineteenth century beguinage. I absolutely loved the atmosphere and the perfect state of the buildings. It has been inserted in the UNESCO World Heritage List not surprisingly and deservedly! On an (almost) autumn Sunday afternoon, having a walk within the walls of this city in the city was very relaxing. There are explanatory panels scattered around. Just a pity that the church was closed and under renovation. The beguinage is in a residential area. Recommend a visit!

A total of 13 beguinages in Flanders are listed under UNESCO. Of the 13, this is the newest one and has been built in the 19th C Neo Gothic Style. The Begijnhof by itself is exceptionally large and the Cathedral is just huge & tall with 2 floors, filled with stunning stained glass.

Erg mooi begijnhof, enkel jammer dat er in elke straat auto's geparkeerd staan. Je kan dus geen mooie foto's nemen en het begijnhof verliest veel van zijn charme. Auto's weg en het zou 5 sterren waard zijn! Toevoeging: de kerk en een aantal huizen stonden volledig in de stellingen.
