The world's first protected land. And, America's first protected land too! This forest is stunning! Driving from hwy 25 south of Truth or Consequences, NM, exit 63 to travel to Silver City, (cutting through Hillsboro, you'll see the clearly marked directional signs), is all quite a scenic daytrip drive. I suggest going when you're not in a hurry so you can stop thoughout the Gila at places like Wright's Cabin, Emory Pass, The Upper Galinas and much more to soak in the beauty and enjoy the fresh air and wilderness environment. Packing a picnic lunch is a great idea and there are picnic tables near campgrounds, (with rustic facilities), to enjoy an afternoon with family or friends. A NM must see site!!

My husband and I had already been in the area in Arizona, but one of my husband's coworkers recommended going and visit the area in NM which was beautiful and much more scenic. I would recommend to be careful when driving. The cliffs were really high up, there are lots of curves, the road is narrow, and there are no guardrails.

This is the best wilderness national forest. There are small lakes, hiking trails, motorized trails, horse trails, and many square miles of limited access areas to explore. We visit this forest regularly. There are many primitive camping areas and a few camping areas with electricity and water. If you like wilderness outdoor activities, this is one to visit.

Many great views from the mountains. I drove through many parts of the forest. The main park roads are fine. The old logging roads are passable but rugged. Some of them are only traveled when one must with narrow spaces through the trees and some huge washouts. The high 7,500 altitude limits the amount of hiking but for those acclimated to the thin air. Everything is very dry due to the drought conditions. I heard many bull elks bugling and saw two fresh cougar kills (yearling elk). The public facilities were usually limited to open spaces to camp. Only one campsite was noted to have restroom facilities, there may be more but I did not see them. Weather was great!
