The Girnar Hills in Junagadh district of Gujarat, are famous since ancient times as a place of pilgrimage for both Hindus and Jains. The town of Junagadh is situated practically at the foot of these hills to their west. These hills lie between the parallels of latitude North 210 25' and 210 35' and meridians of longitude East 700 30' and 700 40'. Looked from above, the forest area looks like a circular disc of about 16 km. diameter. The area is bound on the east by the agrarian-pastoral revenue areas of Bhesan taluka and on the remaining three directions by the revenue areas of Junagadh taluka. Locally these forests are also known as Dungar. Girnar forests were once part of a major forest ecosystem comprising of Gir and Girnar. Gradually the urbanization and economic activities caused by major agricultural expansion and industrialization have isolated these two forests converting Girnar as na isolated compact patch of forested habitat of 17,878.871 (178.8 Km2) Administratively, the Girnar Wildlife Sanctuary falls under the Junagadh forest Division with headquarter at Junagadh.

The ancient name of Girinar was Ujjayanta or Girivar. These hills are also famous for historical temples, inscriptions and inscriptions of kings (which are now often in ruined condition). The main 14 scriptures of Ashoka are engraved on a large rock in the foothills of the hill. On this rock, there is a famous Sanskrit inscription of Kshatrapa Rudradaman around 150 AD. It has a beautiful description of Jain and Vishnumandir built and renovated by the emperor Chandragupta Maurya and later kings. This article is considered important for the study of the development of Sanskrit poetry. In this large inscription, the name and lineage of Rudradaman is mentioned and in Rudradaman Samvat 72, there is a poetic description of the ancient Sudarshan lake breaking up due to terrible storm water. Especially the description of the Sundernasikta and the Palashini rivers to be dammed by stopping the water and getting rid of the great storm and storm is very beautiful. Another inscription dated to 458 AD on the rock of this inscription is also of the time of Guptasamrat Skandagupta, which mentions the restoration of the bridge or dam of Sudarshan Tadag once again by Chakrapalit, son of the then national Parnadatta of Surashtra, because the old dam, The one who was built by Rudradaman was corrupted during the coronation year of Skandagupta, destroyed by the Mahaveg of water.
