Puhi-Kai-Iti; this is the area where Maia Poroaki around the year 1300, who came on the canoe Te Ikaroa-a-Rauru built his whare wananga or House of Knowledge. Maia was an expert gardener who grew Hue or Gourd as containers to hold water, preserve food and hold special karakia. This is where the area received its name "Kaiti" from Maia whare wananga Puhi-Kai-Iti.
