A friendly, welcoming congregation. We were looking for a smaller church, and one local pastor made three suggestions, one of which was Immanuel. We went there first and never left! Worship is typically about 30 people, and combines some traditional hymns with more modern music, including some written by one of the music leaders. All is performed in a folksy (rather than formal) style. There's no organ, instead count on a piano, guitar, and sometimes a mandolin or a fiddle. The half-time pastor, Matthew, preaches twice a month; the other weeks are covered by a variety of people from within and outside the congregation. Scriptures are often read in Spanish as well as English, and the pastor knows Arabic. There's a strong, biblically-based social justice focus, and also an awareness of the Spirit's role in our lives. It is definitely not a \charismatic\ church, but there are occasions for healing prayer-- and a lot of friendly people who enjoy greeting newcomers. In a small congregation like that, it's easy to know who's new and welcome them.
