A lovely venue. Renovated to an amazingly high standard. A little too much gold work for my tastes but the interior is impressive none-the-less. It's easy to find in Harrogate and within walking distance of several large parking structures. The toilets were well maintained & the bar was well staffed, although I absolutely HATE being served drinks in flimsy plastic cups; especially for the price you pay for the drinks. Seating in the theatre was fairly comfy but you wouldn't want to sit through a 6 hour epic play in them. When I visited to watch comedian Stewart Lee, I had to print off my own tickets but was still charged a 1.75 handling fee for each ticket. When I questioned theatre staff about this they just laughed, thinking I was joking. I wasn't & I pointed out that I wasn't. They still just laughed. I'd like to know why that charge is levied when it's me that actually did the \handling\. Sharlatans.

Harrogate in the wet and windy days of November is sometimes not shown off to its magnificent best. We were off to this beautifully restored mega venue for a concert in memory of Aretha Franklin who passed away on 2008. The scene was set ... theatre-land splendour, a fabulous cast, a bullish house, the warmth, smell and atmosphere electric, and bang ... two hours of loud, almost Hollywood, music reminding everyone if how much Miss Franklin had contributed to 20th Century Musicality and the muscular range of compositions she favoured. And could the Royal Hall add to all this conviviality? You bet it could. The performers and audience alike were moved to high enthusiasm by the majesty of the room, ornate decor and brilliant stage, lighting and seating. Any performance by any artist would be suitably enhanced by this magnificent hall. And finally, the friendly and adequate staffing was very well up to the task of seeing that all was safe and well for their paying guests. All in all, the hall did it all.

Was at a show at the convention centre and went into this hall for food. Catering was very slow with very limited choice and little understanding of gluten free.i ended up having a jacket potato with cheese and no salad as there was couscous all over the salad table. My potato was raw and took an age to have replaced. The manager was polite but unhelpful. The replacement potato was like warm but cooked.

It's a beautiful place, just watch out for the officious doorman. I had a small handbag with me and I showed it to the doorman, I said you don't think I've got a bottle in it do you to which he replied I look in your bag or you don't get in. Now, I understand that he's got to do his job, it's just that there was no humour in him whatsoever, he made me feel like a child not a grown woman!! I would have given 5 stars otherwise.
