The Higashiyama Sky Tower gives a commanding view of the zoo next door and of Nagoya city nearby. On a clear day the Japanese alps will also be visible to the north, shining white with snow. Steam from the volcano Mt Ontake might also be visible. The tower houses a restaurant, a gift shop, and a viewing deck. It is also open into the evening hours to see the city lights shine once the sun sets.

Higashiyama Sky Tower was opened in 1989 as part of the commemoration of the centennial of Nagoya City’s foundation. Aside from the observation deck, it also has a restaurant. Being a disaster-prone country (especially earthquakes), the Sky Tower was also fitted with a vibration-damping equipment, designed to absorb energy from the earthquakes (I believe many buildings in Japan were also fitted with similar systems). The Sky Tower is also used as a relay station for disaster-prevention wireless communications of the local government. Standing over Mount Higashi by 134 meters, the glass needle-like Higashiyama Sky Tower is perfect to have a view of the entire zoo, botanical gardens, Nagoya City and its nearby places. Too bad we weren’t able to stay long enough to see the sunset and the night view.

Entered as it was part of the zoo ticket. It's quite a tired building and the view across nagoya is not particularly enthralling

Nice overview area. It offers good view of the zoo, its forest and surroundings of Nagoya. In a good clear day you can see almost all the city and surroundings. But there are not too much more to see. There is a nice restaurant at the top. But almost nothing else besides that. All information is only on Japanese on the view area and you can find some souvenirs there. But is is not the tallest place in the city and nothing else attractive. Good point is that the price is not too high when you buy together with the zoo entrance.

Great views, the zoo has been updated recently, giving some animals more space to move. That said, this zoo is not the kindest to it's wild animals, many animals like birds and cats have very very tiny spaces. It's cruel. I'm from Australia, we have zoo's too. Open zoos, but still cruel. These animals deserve much much bigger spaces to mimic their natural habitats. I know it's near impossible to do in Japan as space is premium. Don't open a national zoo in central suburbia. Close it, move it to the outskirts and give the animals FREE RANGE! Visitors will appreciate and admire the surrounding so much more. Give us a safari mountain experience, where animals and people enjoy. Nagoya zoo is meant for housing, not animal cages.
