A wonderful place to walk
Some steep hills but we'll worth it
Lack of signposts up there, but so far my favourite hike in Peak District. Be sure to not miss a waterfall.
Walking from Hayfield up to Kinder Scout across to Kinder Downfall and back down William Clough and White Brow to the reservoir is a great days outing. Parking in Hayfield is limited and lanes are tight near the start although there is public parking in the village. The walk up to Kinder Scout is a gradual ascent across fields moving to easy moorland paths. One you get to the peak you'll need to decide if you want the steep way up or the gradual ascent that loops around and comes up via the Pennine Way, this is rocky and awkward at times and not suitable to anyone other than able bodied, although small children could manage with care. if you take this slow ascent, look out for the old Medieval stone cross marking the turning up to the ascent. Once your at the near top there are flag stone paths across the moorland leading to the viewing points which make easy walking. The Pennine Way takes you across the top on paths which are rock strewn and at times loose and tricky. In bad weather they would be wet and slippy. In dry it's easy enough to negotiate. Again it's not a walk for anyone in weak footwear or who is disabled. The way down from the Pennine Way back to Hayfield through William Clough is tricky and wet in bad weather, this descent is only recommended if your well shod and fit. In better weather it's negotiable and a pleasant descent. Watch out for dippers, and other small birds on the way down. Overall there are great views on a clear day across to Stockport and Glossop or across Edale Moor and the High Peak area.
