This is a very friendly and polite place. The food on offer is presented and cooked to an excellent standard. In the current climate there are plenty of protective screens up and social distancing is working well here. The prices are good for the quality and quantity of food that you get offered. This pub is set in a nice setting with views of the Derbyshire hills, there is a nice drive to the pub with plenty of scenery to see on the way. It is certainly worth a visit if you are passing and certainly worth a drive out to visit The Hanging Gate. I will certainly be visiting again.

I hate to leave a bad review! But people need to know. The first thing I noticed was that there are SO many things on the menu. Which made me think surely they can't make all of those things?! And make them taste nice. I was proven right when my gravity defying chicken curry arrived. It tasted like curry powder and water but looked like something a dog had regurgitated. It was also the consistency of very firm wall paper paste. In fact I held the full bowl upside down over my head for a good few seconds and it stayed exactly in place!! My boyfriend asked for a side of mayo, with his average at best burger, which came out in a little paper tub and looked like it was put there weeks ago due to the thick hard layer on top! I hate to think how they are adhering to the covid safety guidelines! (we ate in the beer garden and I didn't go inside so I can't comment further there). Some of the fried/grilled food looked edible though so my suggestion would be to minimise the menu, focus on putting more time and effort into a smaller amount of dishes and making them tasty and well cooked! I have given this pub 2 stars purely because the staff we encountered were very friendly.

Excellent all round experience. Try the steak and kidney pie ...stuffed with tender meat ...delicious! Plus a warm welcome from attentive, polite staff.
