A lot of history, sometimes sad, as in this case. The stone is for a murdered sailor. However the murders of the sailor paid a heavy price. Further up the hill you can see the place were all three were hung, and left for some years to rot. A warning to all.

Park at the cafe and walk the 10 min on a flat path to the sailors stone... and beyond. Interesting local history. Great views of the punchbowl
Lovely landmark. Do the full 10k walk and find out about the devils punch bowl’s amazing history linked to Portsmouth, Highway robbery and much more!
Great bit of local history... The stone was covered up for many years hidden by nature then when the tunnel was built and this path made to a hard track it has become a popular place to walk and see the views. The stone was put in place hundreds of years ago as a memorial to the brutal killing of An unknown sailor. There is a story board that tells you all the details.
