The Maeslantkering a storm surge barrier on the Nieuwe Waterweg to protect Rotterdam and Dordrecht is a true masterpiece. It is one of the largest moving structures in the world. The Keringhuis is the visitor center where information on water management and the technical details of the barrier are explained.

I never saw this kind of gate anywhere, it's truly an amazing hydraulic engineering work! I went to visit the Keringhuis an hour before the closure. It's a pity that the explanations are in dutch only, because we couldn't understand much. An English translation would help a lot! Anyway, it was worth and the employees were all very nice. At 1 there is an English guided tour so, I would suggest the non dutch speakers to go for that one.
As a civil engineer this place is well worth the voyage. I called ahead and asked if they could do an English tour, which they graciously accommodated. The tour had amazing access and the guide was extremely knowledgeable with technical questions. The inside of the museum was all in Dutch so I didn't get as much out of it. To get here either take a taxi direct, or from hook of Holland which has busses.
Had a great tour by a female engineering student on the day the whole system closed for a test! Very professional and knowledgeable!
Today they opened up a little cafe, they have some good snacks for decent prices. Great view!
