The designation of the area as snake caves can be traced back for at least 500 years. The snake caves are a network of sandstone caves that are of natural and man made origins. A central cave was only rediscoverd during the first World War. Its creation is still debated. It is believed that it served as a sacred Roman burial ground and was associated to the Roman Vicus. The cave shows traces of artificial building activity and has dozens cavities branching of from the main cavity in all directions.
