We took a tour to this valley. The shuttle driver shared a lot of interesting local stories. The shuttle van drove across the river a few times...quite an adventure.. beautiful views as well...the lookout is a must visit

Gorgeous Black Sand Beach! The largest beach we visited and by far the finest/softest sand on the Big Island. Road down is crazy steep. Did not need to put the Jeep in 4wheel to make the trip this time, but having it is a . Best advice is to keep your eyes open on the way down for vehicles coming up. The road is not very wide and those traveling up have (need) the right of way. The wild horses come right up to you. Very cool spot. Have respect for the area please. It is Sacred Land once used for ancient burials

Sacred place of extreme beauty especially in the farm land if you ever get invited to see past the gates. Unfortunately this will not be the case for you because the residents are extremely upset with the amount of visitors coming. The road is overwhelmed with people coming up and down yet people who live here depend on this road. People driving down do not follow the rules. This used to be an untouched place, but no longer, it is sad to see. Social media can be harmful sometimes and it is best if we all stop going. Better to go where you are invited. American people will not listen and respect though. Sad story.

Steep hike I really advise not going on a rainy day. Other than that great views and you can even see some wild horses roam around.

My ultimate favorite hike on the Big Island. The scenery is stunning! So lush and green.

Locals and tourists alike will tell you that Waipi’o (pronounced like Y-P-O) is worth the drive. The best views of the cliffs are from the top (at the viewpoint) and at a clearing a short walk down the trail. If that’s all you want to see, you don’t need hiking gear or 4WD. To see the waterfall or the beach, you’ll need to hike or Jeep down the very steep, muddy trail. For me and my group from Colorado, the hike was relatively easy but would have been more enjoyable with hiking poles. A 4WD vehicle is definitely the best way to see this beautiful valley. The trail doesn’t have any switchbacks to make the climb easier. It’s not for the faint of heart or beginner hiker/4-wheel-driver. Do your research and be prepared! I would highly recommend spending a whole day here.

Took the wrangler down the road, it was not nearly as scary as they made it sound, but not for an inexperienced driver. The black sand beach and river running to it may be the most amazing site on island and for sure the softest sand on the big island. Bring your board, awesome body surfing area! Wish we would have known ahead of time. Beach is huge so even on perfect sunny day plenty of room for seclusion and chill.

Like all the reviews say, this private ancient valley is stunningly beautiful and worth the visit - or is it? The lush landscape, 1500’ waterfall, horses on the black sand beach, the remote community of locals... it’s paradise. However, without a 4WD, the hike back up is crushing - so be prepared to be parched and wheezing. Thoughts that went through my head: “Climbed the cliffs of insanity, dueled the Spaniard, defeated the giant, outwitted the Sicilian, and survived the fire swamp. Is she really worth this? Is this true love or is she maybe just the Queen of Garbage?” But then, life is pain. Do the hike.
