You can buy a ticket for Peña de Hierro in the mine park of Riotinto and... you should! It's an amazing place with an interesting history (recently, NASA scientists paid a visit, for example)!

Interesting add-on to the Mining Museum in the village of Rio Tinto. Nice walk through the old railway tunnel to the flooded quarry which is about 40 metres deep and filled with highly toxic water with a PH of about 2.1, plus totally contaminated with Heavy Metals which the acidic water has dissolved naturally. This contamination is a natural occurrence, not just the mining activity and has turned the the Rio Tinto River very red. Only micro-organisms survive in the river as they live off some of the mineral oxides. NASA visited and studied the whole area for about three years prior to making the journey to Mars as they think the occurrence might exist on the Red Planet.

Una visita muy recomendable. El guía fue muy amable y recomendamos la visita a la mina y el viaje en tren. Muchos botes y a baja velocidad, muy bien para hacer fotos. Al final del trayecto puedes bajarte a hacer fotos junto al río tinto como ves en las imágenes.
Gli intensi colori della natura sorprendono, come l' impressionante impronta umana... La guida del museo permette di capire meglio quello che stiamo osservando e dá accesso ad una delle gallerie che sbocca al centro della miniera a cielo aperto. Per il resto l'intero parco é pubblico e si possono seguire vari sentieri
Le mirador du lac rouge et le point de départ des différents sentiers de randonnées du site de Peña de Hierro. Le site est assez calme pendant la période de mai où il n'y a quasiment pas de touristes. Prenez le temps de flâner dans ce paysage ocre au dessus de la mine.
Se trata de una visita corta aunque complementaria al resto de visitas posible en Río Tinto. Sorprende la salida del túnel visitable
