It’s a delightful snack after a long walk from the bus station and around the temple. The mochi is served hot with a lightly sweet syrup on top with complimentary pot of tea. I enjoyed it so much I devoured 3 servings!
Delicious grilled mochi with history of 1000 years, definitely a must try in Kyoto.
A Japanese confectionary shop with 1000 years of history! Check out the architecture of the shop building too. Very friendly atmosphere. Dog-friendly too. Very simple menu. They only serve one kind of confectionary, aburi-mochi (roasted rice cake with white sweet miso sauce), 500 yen/plate (about 10-12 pieces, I didn’t count precisely), served with a big pot of tea. Parking available (1-hour free). (Another similar store, Kazariya, locates across the street is about 400 years old. Worth checking out too. You can compare the difference of the taste of their aburi-mochi).
Run by 25 generations of women of the same family since 1002, Ichiwa is a Kyoto institution like no other. 500 gets you a plate of hand-grilled mochi sticks dipped in soy bean powder sauce.
