This place is a Scotland gem. We only stumbled upon it because we were following a tourist route and thankfully we did! The staff are inviting, friendly and very knowledgeable. The collection of books is incredible. I saw first editions of Shakespeare, the Holy Bible: King James Version (1611), and the Great Bible (King Henry VIII from 1539). The best part was that they weren't behind glass in a museum; the curator took the books out for me and I could carefully flip through the pages. Truly a fascinating and unique experience. There were so many more to see but we didn't have a lot of time on our road trip to stay longer. Highly recommend a stop here!

One of the best library's for books I have ever been to! Has books going back to the 1500's. I am very proud to have visited this incredible library that is publicly open to anyone wishing to visit!

I wasn't looking for this place I just followed a brown sign and we found each other. If you love history..books and world records this is the place to go. It was so tranquil and the staff were so inviting and friendly and knowledgeable that I could have remained all day. The one thing it misses is a place for refreshments but that is a minor thing. They are creating a walk to the river and you have a church and nearby castle ruin for anyone who wants to explore beyond the wonders of Scotland's original library.

Extraordinary time exploring the historic library and archive - what an adventure in history. We were regaled with numerous stories by the Librarian and Keeper of Books, and enjoyed opportunities to handle some of the oldest materials in the collection. Here you can turn the pages of the King James pulpit bible from the year it was sent to all the churches in Scotland. Here you can view the earliest cottage garden advice books. Here your library-loving heart will find a resting place. Hours and days are limited so check carefully - you won't want to miss this!
