Medium security prison run as a farm. Cabbage is the main crop cultivated. Prisoners are housed in long barracks with one floor, making this prison significantly different from ones like Diepkloof and Pretoria Central(C-MAX). Leeuwkop Prison has become significantly smaller since my youth. In the 1980s the entire area was under cultivation, now only 2 cabbage beds are. The DCS refers to this prison as "Leeuwkop Prison Farm". It has been used for prisoners to cultivate since its inauguration in 1924 as "Rietfontein Farm No. 15". (1924 was also the year J.B.M Hertzog was elected State President, although it is very unlikely that these two events have anything to do with each other. At that time no prisoner was allowed to vote, no matter what his skin colour.) Attached picture is of signs blocking the view to the gate.
