Formerly part of in Santurce, and now occupying an unmarked white building on Ashford Avenue, José Enrique Restaurant self-defines as a Latin-Caribbean Brasserie, its Chef finding fame for his use of local Ingredients and classic technique to highlight traditional Puerto Rican fare. Open from noon to 11.00pm Wednesday through Sunday, social distancing guidelines limiting capacity and making reservations a must, it is amidst largely unadorned walls that guests are seated swiftly, servers pleasant and quick to describe the relatively brief menu. Awarded “Best New Chefs" accolades in 2013 by Food & Wine, the JBF offering a Finalist spot for “Best Chef South” two years later, José Enrique in 2021 carries a price tag somewhere between gourmet and casual, 12 housemade Morcilla enjoyable but not 3x so much as La Alcapurria Quemá though the 5 Bacalaito made like a Chinese Scallion Pancake is admittedly exquisite. Ranging 21 to 44 for Main courses, a side of Mofongo with roasted Tomato Sauce featuring crisp edges around a succulent center, do be sure to order “Lick Your Plate Chicken” if the roasted Bird and Rice are available, but perhaps reconsider 23 “Schnitzel” that on this night featured perhaps 3oz of flavorless Fish pounded thin and fried with Panko.

Wow! Do not be fooled by the front of the building and walk to one of the next-door places that has outdoor seating. I made that mistake and then read a lot of reviews so the next day we came here. Holy smokes this place has great food. We had the smoked pork app, all three of the fish entrees between 4 of us: the swordfish schnitzel, the fish special (red snapper with an awesome side) and the fish of the day halibut with fancy veggies) and shared the avocado salad. Wow. The fish is definitely a must-order. We all loved our choices. Wish we had saved space for dessert.
Undoubtedly one of the top 5 restaurants Ive ever eaten in. I’m 60 years old and have traveled all throughout North and Central America and the Caribbean. I can’t think of a better experience in gastronomy than here at Jose Enrique. I had the great fortune to meet him. He is unbelievably modest and incredibly kind. I had the churrasco. Don’t muss this restaurant, you can thank me later!!
This was a wonderful experience. The food was excellent, service was no-nonsense and efficient. They treated our six year old daughter with respect, and made us all feel welcome. We loved it and can’t wait to return to San Juan and visit again.
We had lunch at Jose Enrique on January 20, 2021. Service was quick. The menu offers a surprising number of options. The avocado salad was beautiful to behold and tasted even better -- the avocado was perfectly ripe, expertly sliced, dressed minimally and combined with some onion. The steak offered at lunch was tender, wildly flavorful and paired well with beans and rice. I will visit again.
Tasty food. Reservation required and they get full pretty quick. They on Resy and no where else.
I have already recommended this place twice since being there and will recommend to anyone going to San Juan. All of the food was incredible and our server Ivan was amazing.
Best meal I’ve had in recent memory. We were lucky enough to go with a group so we could order a variety of appetizers and everything was delicious. But the starters didn’t compare to the mains, where I had a pork chop so good it left me in disbelief. My mouth will water every time I think about it for years to come, and I’ll surely be back.
