This monument stands in tribute to Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia, who ruled Prussia during the turbulent times of the Napoleonic Wars. He is known for preserving Prussia during those violent times and he said “Every civil servant has a dual obligation: to the sovereign and to the country. It can occur that the two are not compatible; then, the duty to the country is higher.”, an unusually enlightened view for a monarch. The statue is a monumental equestrian statue. The statue is a fairly typical equestrian statue showing the king on his horse with his left hand holding the reins, while holding the imperial sceptre in his right. The monument is unusual in it size, which the statue sitting atop a 3 metre high stone pedestal. Around the pedestal is a sculptural ensemble of Prussia ministers, soldiers and aristocrats from the reign of Friedrich Wilhelm III. Worth seeing this monumental sculpture in Cologne.

Impressive statue in the middle of Heumarkt to the south of the Old Town, near the Rhine. Equestrian statues seem to be scattered all over Cologne!
This is what it looks like during the winter. Pretty.
Pretty outstanding statue. Easy view, easy to take pictures it's in the middle of a plaza. So you don't have to worry about the traffic.
Ok place to visit. As per one site it is biggest square in cologne (Not sure really, but believing it). There are many restaurants around it. Didn't find anything interesting but may be place to sit and rest a bit while roaming around.

Currently under renovations but the square is very nice and the surrounding area.
