Over eighty years ago, John F. Donovan founded Donovan Funeral Home in downtown Kalamazoo, and years later, moved the business to a historic mansion at 447 W. South Street. Roy Betzler purchased Donovan's in 1975, working with John's nephew, Charles. Ten years later Roy moved the business to the current, modern, single-story facility on Stadium Drive. In 1991, Roy's son Scott joined the firm. The family expanded their service to the community in 1999, when they bought the Thompson & Hawley Funeral Home in Paw Paw, and renamed it the Betzler & Thompson Life Story Funeral Home. In February of 2006 the physical form of The Life Story Experience was built – The Life Story Center. This unique, modern space features inviting patios, picture windows, cathedral ceilings, home furnishings and allows families to hold services and receptions all under one roof. “It’s truly an extension of your home and doesn’t feel or look like a funeral home”, says Scott Betzler. We've also been offering pet cremation services for over 18 years. Patrick Bauschke and Scott Betzler went above and beyond to create the most wonderful and amazing online Zoom memorial service for my dear brother Andy that I could ever have imagined. They organized videos, music, poetry, live speakers and connections from across the globe. -There were attendees from Thailand, Amsterdam, France, Alaska, New York, California, Oregon, Kalamazoo and more! It was truly unbelievable. There were no technical difficulties, and the communication/planning beforehand was friendly, and they made it so very easy for us! I will always be so very grateful to them, and can't recommend Betzler Funeral Home highly enough!

Patrick was superb and took away so much of my worry about what I was supposed to do. He arranged the funeral, including contacting the priest and the cemetery, and the whole service from Mass to the prayers at the cemetery, was seamless. My Mother looked so peaceful. Every detail was so professionally handled, I would highly recommend Betzler and Patrick in particular to anyone looking for more than just a funeral home to lay to rest your loved one.

The care and expert planning after dad’s unexpected passing was a comfort to my entire family. At a time when I couldn’t think straight, shaken and grieving, Patrick and the entire team at Betzler helped make it a beautiful ceremony and a memorable graveside service. From touching opening remarks, to expertly announcing the speakers, for help with music selection and it’s timing, for passing out individual flowers to place on the grave, and for reminding the family to order the monument marker – Betzler handled everything with style.
