I was gifted a DealMate coupon for a hair shampoo, cut and blow dry at 4th Avenue Hair. I was looking forward to being treated to a more high end haircut since when I do rarely get my ends trimmed I just visit a cheap generic salon. I was impressed with the haircut and that they accommodated my preference of sulfate free shampoo. The rest I was disappointed. The hair washing bowl wasn't comfortable on my neck (a towel might have helped), and I was surprised that the stylist massaged my head scalp when the conditioner was on. Maybe it's just me, but most often the roots never need to be conditioned-it just makes them oily. After the haircut I wanted to blow dry that would be similar to my regular styling (I don't flat iron my long, thick, wavy hair) so the stylist brought out good quality ceramic drying brushes. I mentioned that I used a leave in conditioner on my hair but didn't put any other products in. I guess I should have mentioned a heat protectant since she didn't use any before starting the drying process. My hair is very frizzy and prone to fly-aways so the stylist soon switched from the nylon round brush (that was getting tangled and she pulled it through my hair) to a regular brush. I guess I should have asked prior if the stylist was comfortable cutting and styling thick wavy hair because my hair can't be treated as straight. After ending up with a lot of frizzy volume, the stylist was able to go in with the round ceramic bristle brush and smooth things out a bit. The stylist's effort to dry my bangs was minimal-she tried to use the round brush and nicked my nose as she did. I left with flat, oily looking bangs that has no bounce or shape, and an oily scalp that hurt from her scraping the round brush through my hair and pulling it out to the sides of my head. The people at 4th Avenue Hair are lovely to talk to and the facility is neat and clean. I may have just got a less experienced stylist or expected too much of a lower class salon.
