On 26 December 2004, the giant waves of the Indian Ocean smashed the coast of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and other South-east Asian countries killing thousands and rendering many homeless. Tsunami Memorial is indeed a very special monument in honor of the people who lost their lives under the havoc wrecked by the gigantic waves. The Tsunami Monument is a unique structure, located near the southern shore in Kanyakumari. As the name suggests, this monument was built in the memory of those who died in the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. The earthquake affected many countries, including India, Sri Lanka, Somalia, Thailand, Maldives and Indonesia. Recorded as one of the devastating natural disasters in the history, this underwater megathrust earthquake claimed around 280000 lives. People from places near and far visit this monument to pay homage to all those who lost their lives because of this catastrophic tsunami.
The Tsunami Monument is a memorial to the people in Kanyakumari who lost their lives due to the Tsunami of 26 Dec 2004. It is 16 feet high blue coloured statue made of steel. The monument is very close to the beach. The monument shows a giant wave (tsunami wave) that is held in place by a hand, while the other hand holds on to a lamp. This lamp probably denotes the lamp of hope kept alight. It is indeed a special monument. People visiting Kanyakumari pay homage to the Tsunami victims at this monument when they visit the place.
