The Thirunakkara Mahadevar Temple is one of 108 revered Shivalayas in central Kerala, located right in the middle of the town of Kottayam. The temple was built by the Ray of Thekkumkoor and is around 500 years old. A variety of unique statues and murals of different Hindu Deities have been preserved there as well. One widespread conviction is that Shiva's idol is installed by the sage Parashurama. In the shape of the "Thirunakkara thevar" the Thekkukkoor Royal Family found the idol to be their paradevatha (guard deity)
