The original Loch Duart site we operate is the oldest salmon farm in Sutherland, dating back to 1975. Today we farm the whole of Eddrachillies Bay - a total of nine sites, employing around 60 local people but, due to extensive fallowing, with only six in operation at any one time. Salmon rearing is the prime occupation of many of the people of Scourie and is vital to the economy. Loch Duart is now farming in the Hebrides, providing valuable jobs in an area where the population is declining. Our approach to rearing salmon gives priority to the health and welfare of the fish, to the long term protection of the environment and to the delivery of an outstanding product to the consumer. We produce approximately 3600 tonnes per annum through a fully-integrated system designed to maximise the health of our stocks. This equates to around 2.5% of total Scottish production and is distributed in UK and overseas markets to discerning customers seeking better quality salmon from responsible and sustainable aquaculture. We have developed a polyculture programme which involves the cultivation of sea urchins and seaweed alongside our salmon - for nutrient balancing and commercial reasons. Loch Duart Ltd is a Scottish company owned and run by the directors. The three founding directors are totally involved in every aspect of the day-to-day activities of the company, totally committed to the environmental and fish welfare standards explained elsewhere on this website and totally committed to the long-term success of a small independent Scottish salmon farm.
