Biggest concern for me here was the road getting in/out from the ramp. Judging by the reviews I took a chance with my AWD Honda Ridgeline. Seriously no sweat for any AWD vehicle with adequate ground clearance. Don't trust GPS directions once you hit gravel. Google will try and take you on a dead end residential path. Plenty of handwritten signs warning you though. Just follow signs for \Stone Place.\ The biggest issue isn't getting to the ramp, it's climbing the gravel road to get back out to the main road. A 2wd pickup truck just won't do it. Not enough weight in the rear to keep enough traction to get back up. A front wheel drive might be able to do it as long as conditions are dry, but if it rains, I doubt you'll have enough traction for the climb. If you do get stuck, it's a nice hike to the top so you can get service on your phone for help. Other issue is at times it is too narrow to allow another vehicle to pass. If you meet someone in one of these areas, someone is going to have to back up until there's a safe spot to pass. There's a lot of people that pull trailers to this ramp which makes this even more difficult. That said, I wasn't worried once I drove it. My vehicle handled it no sweat, and I will return as it is WAY less crowded on the weekends than the easier accessed SC ramp, and this is a beautiful lake to kayak!

I love this place! The road to Lake Tugalo requires 4-wheel drive. There is a boat ramp, large parking lot, bathroom, and small dock. Nice campsites at the boat ramp and several boat-in campsites around the lake. There are no houses here. Nice, secluded lake to boat, fish, kayak, etc. Also, Stoneplace Trail ends here. Starting from here its a 5-mile hike or bike uphill to Tallulah Gorge State Park’s Jane Hurt Yarn Interpretive Center.

Tried to go kayaking on Lake Tugalo today but the road to Stone Place boat ramp was washed out and closed. Crews were arriving to fix and regrade the road but I have no idea how many days or weeks it will take to fix it....I’m not sure if the SC boat ramp is open, I didn’t feel like driving another hour to try and find out.

Very secluded lake access. Make sure your car is able to get up and down steep roads that have loose gravel. Some points on the drive are narrow to where only one car can pass at a time.
