Cowboy trails is a great area for hiking, trail running and rocks scrambling in the Red Rock area. Horse riding at Sunset is highly recommended at the local stables.

I have driven past this trailhead many times and finally decided to try hiking at it last week. It is not as impressive as trails on the scenic drive or in Calico Basin but it still was a nice change of scenery for me. I would particularly recommend Boneshaker. It offered some incredible views of Red Rock Canyon looking west across the state highway. Make sure to have a good map downloaded prior to setting out as this is a very large network of trails.

This is a popular destination for horseback riding, biking, and hiking. There are trails that let you explore canyons, a cave, and a range of hikes ranging from short 1 milers, to 5 miles and strenuous. Following the “Bomb Voyage” trail (see Google Maps) up to the top of the plateau yields one of the best overlooks of Red Rock out there. Keep following the trail and you’ll get impressive closeup overlooks of Las Vegas. One thing to note, the plateau itself offers shade until about 8 a.m.. There are no trees or other natural shade points; so a hat and a couple liters of water are important if you’re going to hike between April and November.
