Beautiful trail, rated moderate up to the cabin at 5.2 miles, Hayford peak is another 2.2 miles an rated difficult. Start off in typical desert scenery and quickly ascend into the valley and pine forest, where bluebirds and other birds can be seen. Wildlife is there as the tracks i found show rabbit, rodents, deer, bighorn, and foxes.. Didn't see any on my hike, the valley sides offer beautiful views of the ridges and mountain above, following a wash like trail winding up a 2k feet elevation change to the old cabin. Can stay overnight in the cabin, there is a wood burning stove, table and benches, logbook and other items left by travelers. Great day hike.

Hidden Forest trailhead starts at 5,500 feet and ends at the cabin, 5.5 miles away at 7,700 feet. The incline is steady and non-taxing. A 2-wheel drive high clearance vehicle can get you safely to the trailhead. It's about 90 minutes outside of Las Vegas. Many pictures and images suggest shade and trees. Doing this hike in July I can say two things about this. 1. The elevation gain makes the beginning of the trail about 10 degrees cooler than the Las Vegas valley. 2. There's no real shade to speak of until the 3rd mile, and even then the shade is hit and miss until mile 4. Given these details, your water consumption will be at a higher rate than you may expect. Thankfully, even in mid-July the water source at the cabin was present and we were able to refill our packs with a Sawyer water filter.

Great trail! Wonderful escape from the built up vegas area. Goes from the Joshua tree biome up to ponderosa pine forest. Great camping spots, all around hidden gem

It's about an hour's drive on a rough and rocky dirt road to the start of the hike. So you'll need a truck or off roading vehicle to get to the trail head. It's a scenic up hill 5.5 mile hike to the warden's cabin and back round trip 11 miles. We went in mid March and there was still some snow up there.

Great hike, but the trail condition is brutal.
