The Great Central Way is a Pedestrian Way which was originally created by Leicester City Council in the 1980s. They utilised the former Great Central Railway's disused permanent way between Duns Lane, Leicester - via the Victorian Bowstring bridge which crossed over Western Boulevard, Leicester (and which De Montfort University contrived to have demolished in December 2010/January 2011) - to The City of Leicester's southern boundary at Glen Parva and, by cutting back the overgrown trees and bushes then tarmacking it throughout to provide a smooth surface for walkers, runners and cyclists (also there is a part of it which horse riders can use although not actually a bridleway), made it into a very popular leisure route for the Public into and out of The City. Since then other councils have copied Leicester City Council's example and have done the same in their areas thereby extending the way. It has subsequently been incorporated into the National Sustran Cycle Network (route number 6 which runs from Dover to Inverness). A large proportion of its route in The City of Leicester runs through the Aylestone Meadows Nature Reserve and, as the permanent way was elevated in this area so the Great Central Railway could cross the bridge over Middleton Street near Aylestone village, it provides excellent views as one progresses along it's route.
