You can experience hang gliding in a safe and fun environment at Thermal Valley Hang Gliding. It is located only 1.5 hours from Charlotte, NC. When you book a tandem flight, you will show up and will be greeted by Craig, his wife, and their dog. There will be a briefing, paperwork, and a chance to ask your questions. Then they will take you to the little plane and the glider. The glider is attached to a plane with a cable. When you are ready, the plane takes off with the glider in tow. Once you reach the appropriate altitude, they release the cable and the plane spirals quickly back down towards the ground. That was very cool to see. The total flight was about ten minutes for me. Craig will obviously fly the glider, but he will teach you and lets you turn the glider a few times. He is a skilled & fun pilot who will put you at ease and have you laughing (and singing) while flying high above the ground. You've never experienced anything like it. I highly highly recommend you try it out!

Greig and the crew are very family friendly, they let my sons drive their golf car. We meet the entire family even Greig's copilot Sonny his golden retriever, who is very friendly. It is worth doing it, Greig and the crew kept us save and at the end it was the best flying experience we had. My family and I loved it so much we want to do it again next time we are in NC.
My family had wanted to try hang gliding for a while and were so excited when we found this place while we were vacationing in the Boone/Blowing Rock area. You can make reservations online but I did it over the phone because I had some questions. When we arrived, we were warmly greeted by staff and went through a short training/education. Then it was time to go up! We were all a little nervous but felt completely safe. We each did a tandem ride with Craig...he is SO FRIENDLY! A smaller plane pulls your hang glider up into the sky and disconnects and you gradually glide back down. Craig teaches you about hang gliding, steering, and thermal lifts while you are up there. This is a family run business and everyone was so kind and helpful. We had an awesome time here and I highly recommend this place.
I can't believe I stumble upon Thermal Valley by luck. Super informative staff (Olivia), answered all of my nervous boyfriend's questions about how to land by himself if the instructor passed out lol. Craig was super friendly and a great instructor. I can't wait to come back and do it again. To everyone feeling nervous, I have never felt so safe with such amazing staff that make the experience feel like a piece of cake.
Awesome views! Great fun! Staff were all upbeat and kept you in the loop about what to expect and what the next thing they would do. It's on the backside of a small airport you wonder about finding it but it's there.
Craig and his team are fantastic and continue to be very accommodating! They make safety a high priority and create a comfortable atmosphere. Plan on continuing with him to get my HG Pilot's license. Great job by all...
