This castle only came into the possession of English Heritage in 1995, by which time it was overgrown and dilapidated. EH have decided to leave it in a similar state as a haven for plants and wildlife. This is all very good, but it leaves the casual observer very little to enjoy. The ruins are not easily accessed, due to a quite lengthy walk through fields, and upon arrival I was underwhelmed. The most substantial part of the ruins are inaccessible for the foreseeable future which leaves just a quite well preserved gatehouse and remnants of the odd wall to admire. I should point out that the scale of this site is impressive, in its heyday it was one of the most beautiful and impressive castles in middle england, its just a shame that no one has given it the attention it needs to bring out the very best it has to offer. Certainly not the best site to visit in the area, Clun castle is a much better proposition.

It's lovely and quiet here. Currently very overgrown, and due to the deterioration of the wooden steps the highest point is now out of bounds. Hopefully once the \Age of Covid\ has passed English Heritage will be able put that right, as the views from the top are spectacular.
Its gorgeous it truly is, standing there looking at the view is breathtaking, the only thing is it needs a lot of maintenance it kind of looks forgotten about which is so sad x
Great views! But we were disappointed when we couldn't reach the keep due to health and safety reasons. Lots of nettles are in and surrounding the ruin. We parked about 1/2 mile from the ruin and had a look in the church on the way. As with all castles, it is always very interesting to me to learn about the history and this one was full of it! I will let you see for yourself when you get there!
Enormous building, it must have been spectacular in its prime. Not a walk for the old or unfit.
