There's a surprising story behind this peaceful field surrounded by houses in the north-western part of Lewes's centre. In 1923 the field's owner sold it to local printing firm W E Baxter Ltd. The sale included a covenant that Baxter Ltd would not erect on the land, any other building than a pavilion to be used to extend the enjoyment of the field for recreational purposes. This covenant, prohibiting building, was mirrored in the creation of the Baxter's Field Trust which became the community owner of the field in 2003. To this day, the open space is maintained and preserved for everyone's good by this community trust. Dogs are not allowed. This is a restriction shared with Lewes's Grange Gardens. If it snows, this is the place to go for gentle, safe sledging.
Very nice field to chill at however it closes far too early.
Amazing place to make kids tired
Lovely quiet field with lots of benches for sitting, and a separate area for barbecues. Community maintained. Berries for the picking in Summer!
