WiSTEM Society UL is rated 3 out of 5 in the category nonprofit organization management. Read and write reviews about WiSTEM Society UL. The WiSTEM Society UL was created to empower and support female students studying subjects within STEM disciplines - a typically male-dominated industry. We recognise the power of diversity and wish to foster an open and inclusive culture in STEM. Membership is open to all, regardless of gender. We aim to encourage an inclusive environment by providing girls with enhanced opportunities to grow as professionals, leaders and individuals and by driving the attraction, development and retention of women within STEM. "I was taught that the way of progress was neither swift nor easy." - Marie Curie Fast Facts: Less than 20% of Leaving Cert female candidates chose to study physics or chemistry in 2017. By comparison, about 60% took biology. 27% of students in Irish Universities in 2012/13 were studying STEM-related courses but only 35% of those were female. That's less than 10% female participation across most STEM courses. Less than 25% of the 120,000+ people working in STEM-related professions in Ireland are women. Our Goals: To tackle peer isolation by creating a safe space where girls can meet other girls within the same and/or similar discipline. To introduce the students to the benefits and importance of early peer networking; by hosting corporately sponsored information sessions with industry relevant guest speakers. To actively combat the “leaky pipeline” by targeting secondary school students and encouraging them to take higher level math and STEM subject choices for their Leaving Certificate.
