Limpias, Spain
Paseo de Remigio, 1,
N/A
A delightful place! It's just a hop and skip from the Ayuntamiento de Limpias, the Town Hall. A handsome building with flagpoles outside. At the other side of the little square there is a small, and pretty ancient-looking, stone bridge, going across one branch of the river Asón, or maybe it's a small tributary? Immediately on leaving the bridge bear left, and you are on the Antiguo Muelle, the Former Quay of Limpias. Sited as it is on a tidal estuary it was clearly used for moving goods down river. Iron ore is believed to have been the main cargo here, from the 14th century until the 19th. It is backed by some handsome houses, possibly those of merchants. A little further down is an old and ugly building, the former Lonja, the auction house or market for the fish brought in both from the river and the sea. The upper storey of this building is said to have been used as accommodation for seafarers. They would be used to sleeping with a smell of fish, one supposes! The quayside itself joins up with, is in fact the beginning of, the Paseo de la Ría del Asón, the lovely riverside walk that you must take.
