Paul, at Hallowed Turf, has created a small but perfect community league. I play in both leagues on Wednesday (6-a-side) and Saturday (7-a-side) and can honestly say that it is the best footballing experience you can have in London. Paul stands and records every game on his camcorder, and then uploads the highlights on youtube. This, is an absolute luxury, not just for my vanity, but for my teams discipline, because I can see which defenders don't track back and then pull them aside and have a word. The teams have been playing in the leagues for years. There is a great camaraderie among the rival squads, and a strong sense of sportsmanship running throughout. On Saturdays most teams will trickle through to Ryans bar, on Stokey Church Street, easing into the weekend and patting themselves on their back for getting a bit of exercise in. There is passion. There is a league table, real cups and medals on the line, but it is played among gentlemen. Referee's ensure that the games are played fairly... I'm rambling, but you get my drift. This is special. If you have enough friends to enter a team, get in touch with Paul, you won't regret it. He should be on the Queen's Honours List for services to the community, or get McDonald's sponsorship or something.
