This unique Grade 2 listed and thought provoking memorial is worth viewing if visiting Elephant & Castle. Interestingly, the building houses a London Underground electric substation and the atmosphere outside is equally full of energy with the incessant hum of traffic, overhead airliners, sirens, commuters passing by and even talented skaters performing tricks if lucky with your timing. Originally intended to be made from glass so the workings of the transformer could be seen, it was later changed to a stainless steel construction and the design reflects the colours of the sky, passing traffic and street lights in a fascinating way, constantly changing & evolving throughout the day. There are descriptive inscriptions in the pavement and also an information board right by the building. We sat for some time here on the benches taking in the lively evening atmosphere and was a happy moment to remember.

Its a memorial, which doubles as a substation. Some reviewers don't like it, but just remember when this was built in 1961 this was innovation pure.

This is actually an active electricity substation as well as being a memorial to Michael Faraday, originally designed to have glass panels it was though that the lights and potential flashes from a substation may distract drivers. It’s not accessible to the public other than to walk around the perimeter. Often adorned with a colorful selection of local posters and protest stickers.

The memorial is a cool installation, but the square is too open to the extremely busy elephant and castle traffic.
