On Tuesday, July 14, the Los Alamos School Board met (video recording) to discuss the Safe-Start Task Force Report, with recommendations about the 2020-21 school year.  The Task Force is a broadly representative group who have been working since May 2020.  The focus was on engaging key stakeholders and identifying the most feasible solutions for students and staff. School board members listened to reports from each focus area of the Safe-Start Task Force and thoroughly discussed three options for starting school in the fall: 1) a hybrid model, 2) a fully remote model, and 3) a new option that would allow students to start the school year remotely and then move into hybrid or in-person after it is approved by the School Board, New Mexico Public Education Department (PED) and Department of Health (DOH). School board President, Ellen Ben-Naim, reiterated that the School Board’s goal was to focus on the safety and well-being of students and staff.  She stressed that the Board needed to give clear guidance to the community–although she knew that making such a decision would be extremely difficult. “No matter what, it’s a challenging place to be in.”  Ben-Naim said, “COVID leaves us with no choice but to pivot at this point.” Ultimately, the board approved the motion that students begin school on August 13, 2020 in a fully remote model until criteria developed by LAPS staff and the board is met. The board plans to work with staff to draft criteria that will focus on what is best for students and include availability of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), guidance from the New Mexico PED and DOH, and infection rates in the community and region. Once that criteria has been finalized we will share it with parents. The board is looking at a possible move to the hybrid model after Labor Day on Sept 8, 2020 but that will depend on circumstances at the time and guidance from the New Mexico PED and DOH. We know that many of you are eager to know what the initial remote learning period is going to look like. As soon as we have more details about scheduling and teaching strategies, we will let you know. School principals returned to work today and are already working on detailed checklists and plans for the start of school. Students with an IEP will have individually designed assistance based upon commonly agreed upon goals. Thank you for your continued support as we look to ensure the safety and well-being of our students and staff while returning to school this fall. We realize that the decision to start school remotely will be a challenge for many of you and we are working with LANL on flexibility and coordinating with local providers on child care options. Dr. Steinhaus Twitter Important News The LAPS School Board voted Tuesday night to open schools with 100% remote learning for all students. Any change to the hybrid model will include a 4-week lead time and be based upon meeting criteria developed by LAPS staff and approved by the School Board, subject to PED requirements and Health Orders.   School will begin on Thursday, August 13 for all students registered with LAPS. Teachers will report on August 5. The School Board had considered a hybrid model which would limit the number of students present in the building at any given time, but members agreed that it is important to make a decision that is the safest for staff and students and enables teachers to have time to prepare.  Teachers and staff will have opportunities to develop their remote learning skills through professional development and access to tools and resources to enhance online learning. The Safe Start Task Force has been working on a plan for the start of the 2020-2021 school year. Click here to see the current report. Don’t even think about taking your kids to these schools. It’s only good because of the classes and the teachers. The students there are really bad. They will taunt you forever.

I had to visit here to get fingerprinted for a job and I was very happy with the professionalism and efficiency of all the staff members involved. They were all very friendly and courteous!

District is really bad when again, comes to technology and how they work around the system which they made it worse for the middle school to have the worst staff, and the high school to have a bad TFA principal. I haven't seen full on improvements with this but it better change.
