Isolated shelter, but no viees.Worth the detour from Mary's rock if you want to visit all four Byrd's Nest or use a bathroom in the woods.
Very unusual shelter - I understand it was converted from a picnic pavilion. Probably the only shelter in Shenandoah without a water source. If you are planning to spend a night there, make sure to bring water along. What's surprising, I found a water fountain nearby and some water pipes - all disconnected for some reason. Probably a reminder from picnic times.
Great place to rest or to stop and have lunch during your hike
Beautiful area. Nice size shelter. Downside is the long downhill for water, the the uphill climb back.
Pretty good, but a long hike to get water...
The mice can eat through backpacks and clothes to get more nesting materials. The spring has good flow but is a long way downhill.
Didn't actually stay here but stopped for a rest during a hike along the AT. Nice spot at the top of the mountain.
