Rosario Cathedral is one of the 3 churches established by the Portuguese when they landed at Mangalore in 1568. Portuguese Kings, royal stone emblem lies at the entrance of the Cathedral, marking their landing in Mangalore. Other two churches are Lady of Mercy, Paneer & Holy family, Omzoor This Rosario Church was raised to the status of a Cathedral in 1850 (Cathedral is a church building that is considered the seat/cathedra of a bishop & is the mother church for all Christians in that diocese). This Cathedral, historically is the seat of the Bishop of Mangalore, though for decades the Bishop resides at the Official Bishop’s House at Kodialbail The present magnificent Cathedral structure which is more than100 years old, was built in 1914. It has an impressive high dome crowning the entire sanctuary
Architecture is beautiful with gracefully colored facade.Though inner side of dome has some small paintings in the form of saints and Mary annunciation, the rest is spacious for prayers. The rib based ceiling is simple and colorful.
