My family loves to come to this spot to watch sunsets. There is a little hike across from the visitors center that takes you up a hill. At the top, is one of the best places to view sunsets on the Big Island. After the sunset, we then head back down to the visitor center to do some star gazing. As we wait for it to get dark we make ourselves some instant noodles to eat and have some hot coco. The University of Hawaii used to have nightly stargazing tours but this has stopped recently. I am not sure if or when they will come back. It is a bummer because it was amazing!

If you're visiting the island of Hawaii, I recommend anyone who is or isn't an interested astronomy to schedule time to visit the Maunakea Observatory Station. Recommend going early, dressing warm as the temperature gets a bit frigid and some hot cocoa :) Here are a few images to get you interested. Enjoy

Spectacular. The sunsets are breathtaking, 4x4 access.

Some cool trails branch out from the visitor center giving great views of the clouds moving from one side of the island to the next. Definitely cold up here compared to the near the ocean!

Nice stopping place before the summit. Very short hike to see the rare silver sword plant. Picnic tables to eat at. Beverages sold inside. A small monument commemorating ancient Hawaiian tradition.

Spectacular view from 9000 feet up, but the visitor centre is pretty minimal. Would be amazing if there could one day be a comprehensive astronomy-based interpretive centre here.

An experience to do...so cool to be on the roof off Hawaii... If you don't think going to the summit, not necessary....so magical... 4x4 only....

A must see before you trek up to the summit, lots of good information about the observatories and the mountain. The bathrooms are nice and there's a gift store.
